HOW PROFESSIONALS DRILL
1st drill bit selection: For metals: use metal drill bits made of high-performance high-speed steel (HSS). Carbide or stainless steel: Metal drill with titanium coating or made of a cobalt alloy.
Center punching: Mark the drilling point by scribing with a scribing needle. Apply a hardened center punch and punch the hole with a short hammer blow - this prevents the drill from slipping. For HSS drills with cross cut, center punching can be omitted. Pre-drill with a smaller drill bit for large drill diameters.
3. speed: To protect the drill, drill hard metal at low speed and with low pressure. For softer metals, use higher speed. Reduce pressure before breakthrough.
4. cooling: Cool the drill. For long bores, raise the drill several times and supply coolant, if necessary take breaks between drilling.
